A Short Bio

I am a painter, and my favorite thing is to work big. I work in oils, acrylics, watercolor, and silk dye on silk. I have a love affair with nature, and I’m on a mission to re-connect sacred  earth back into our humanly constructed sacred spaces. I work a lot with churches, as I believe cultural change happens first through non-verbal rite and ritual, and that art has the power to change the world.

I’ve been painting since my dad made me an easel when I was 3. Unfortunately the next day I fell out of a tree and broke my arm on the swing, but the easel was still there when it healed.

A studio art major with a BA from St. Olaf College, Northfield MN, my Paracollege concentration was “Art as Expression of the Holy.”

In 1997 our young family returned for a long stay at Holden Village. My work as Holden’s Artist in Residence spans 10 years, and during that time I made a lot of artwork. I also taught a lot. My teaching there ranged from 5-day Elderhostel watercolor workshops; 6-week classes  for resident staff in silk painting, acrylic painting, watercolor and drawing; to painting, drawing and portraiture, and pottery for the local “remote but necessary” public school. I also started teaching 7-day watercolor workshops at Grunewald Guild during this time.

In 2007 our family moved to Bellingham WA. I now do commissioned work for churches all over the nation, teach workshops and shorter classes in several places as well as privately in my home.

  1. Hi Doug. Thanks for asking. Yes, they are available for purchase. I work with a fine art printer in Ft. Collins, CO called Fine Print Imaging. They have a program called “Art for Conservation”, and you can order two different sizes of prints directly from them. They are wonderful archival prints. Almost all of my pictures in the dining hall are prints from Fine Print Imaging.
